The Coaching Process
As with any new skill that someone is learning practice is the important element if new habits are going to be formed. The learning research shows that we are all susceptible to the forgetting curve. This is the exponential rate at which new information leaves our memory.
There is another key challenge faced by any learner. They have to listen to descriptive knowledge and then covert what they have heard into procedural knowledge. In other words, they have to listen to the trainer and figure out how to do it on their own. This is hard to do once the trainer leaves since the fog seems to descend rather quickly.
The objectives behind coaching are two fold. The first is to help reinforce the new learnings. The second objective is that of helping the person perform the new behaviours that will generate the new results. Coaching is about helping the coachee identify a well formed outcome, create a new environment and find new sources of consequences so they can change their behaviour to produce new results.
Below are two overviews of how the coaching process works and the results that are expected to emerge over time. (Click on either image to see a the larger diagram).
